The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was developed in 1997 in a joint effort by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The NAICS, replaced the U.S. Standard Industrial Classification System (SIC) which was in use since the 1930s. NAICS was developed as a replacement for SIC because of the changing economic climate.
